What to Do Instead of Reiki: Three Evidence-Based Paths. Lesson 5 of 5
Path 1: Evidence-Based Psychotherapy
CBT (cognitive-behavioural therapy), ACT, EMDR, schema therapy — methods with the strongest evidence base and international recognition.
What it gives: a state diploma, the ability to work in clinics, insurance coverage for clients in some cases, professional accountability — and protection.
Barriers to entry:
- Basic higher education in psychology or medicine: 4–6 years, 300,000–600,000 ₽ in a private university
- Professional retraining in a specific method (CBT, EMDR): another 1–2 years, 80,000–200,000 ₽
- Personal therapy and supervision — mandatory requirement of most associations
Honestly: this is the most reliable path. And the most expensive and long. For someone in economic crisis — practically inaccessible without credit or support.
Path 2: Yoga Teaching
The RYT-200 and RYT-500 standards (Yoga Alliance) — internationally recognised minimum for a yoga teacher.
What it gives: an international certificate that employers worldwide understand. Can be taught as physical education — no licences required.
Barriers to entry:
- 200-hour course: 50,000–150,000 ₽, 1–3 months intensive
- Stable personal practice needed — minimum 1–2 years before the course
- High competition, especially in Moscow and online
Honestly: the most accessible entry of the three. If you have practice — realistically start in 3–6 months.
Path 3: Qigong and Somatic Practices
Healing qigong is recognised by the WHO as part of traditional Chinese medicine. Can be taught as «physical education» — no licences needed.
Barriers to entry:
- Training with a qualified teacher: from 30,000 ₽, 6–12 months
- No single international certification standard — must choose school carefully
Honestly: a good choice as a second practice alongside something else.
What If There Is No Money for More Education?
Honest answer: there is no cheap path to a reliable helping profession.
But there are intermediate options:
- Free CBT resources: Coursera courses (Yale, Beck Institute), some subsidised
- State universities: psychology faculty in the regions — 40,000–80,000 ₽/year, distance learning
- Social enterprises: some NGOs fund training for specialists working with vulnerable groups
- Employment: assistant/administrator in a psychology centre — entry into the profession with a salary
The Main Conclusion of the Series
Reiki is not deception. People genuinely receive relaxation and support. The problem is that Reiki as a business is built on three unreliable foundations:
- Weak evidence base — no reproducible randomised studies
- Unstable legal status — a grey zone that could close
- No professional protection — no standards, no accountability, no community
If Reiki is your personal practice, a source of inner resource — wonderful. But if you want a profession that will support you in 10 years — build it on a more reliable foundation.
