What science says about reiki — and what it doesn’t say.Lesson 1 of 5
This is the first article in the series “Reiki as a business: what is hidden behind the certificate.”The purpose of the series is not to trash reiki, but to give you the tools to analyze it yourself before spending money and years.
What Happened When Scientists Took Reiki
In 2019, a team of researchers led by Lee published a meta-analysis, a summary study of all available clinical data on reiki. This is the most cited work on the topic.
Result:the subjective level of anxiety in some participants decreased after reiki sessions.People said they felt better, calmer, more relaxed.
Sounds convincing — until you read further.
What the Study Really Showed
The meta-analysis collected data from several small studies. Most of them have —serious methodological problems:
- There is no “blind” control: participants knew that they were receiving reiki, not a placebo
- Small samples (20–60 people)
- Subjective indicators — “how do you feel?”instead of measurable biomarkers
- No study has been replicated by an independent team with the same result.
The authors themselves wrote in their conclusion:“The quality of the evidence is low or very low.More rigorous research is required».
This is the scientific way of saying: we cannot conclude.
Then why do people get better?
Because several mechanisms work whether there is “energy” or not:
1. Placebo effect— powerful and well documented. If a person believes that they are being helped, the pain actually decreases and the anxiety goes away. The brain releases endorphins.
2. Presence effect— an hour in silence, with a caring person next to you, without a phone or tasks. Most people are sorely lacking in this.
3. Warm hands and light touch— activate the parasympathetic nervous system. This is physiology, not esotericism.
4. Breathing and relaxation— any session implies a horizontal position, silence, slowdown. This in itself reduces cortisol.
All this really works. But none of these reasons require «universal life energy ki».
Red Line: When Reiki Becomes Dangerous
While reiki is positioned as a practice of relaxation and support, it is harmless and sometimes useful.
The danger begins when the master or school declares:
- «Reiki cures cancer»
- “Reiki eliminates depression without psychotherapy”
- «Reiki replaces medicine»
- “We cured diabetes/autism/infertility”
This is no longer a gray area.In Russia, such statements can be qualified according toArt.238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation(provision of services that do not meet safety requirements) andArt.159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation(fraud), if a person refused medical care in favor of Reiki and his health was harmed.
A master who promises treatment puts not only his money on the line, but also his freedom.
What works better and it’s proven
If the goal is to reduce anxiety, stress and improve well-being, there are methods with an incomparably stronger evidence base:
| Method | Quality of evidence | Confession |
|---|---|---|
| CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) | High | WHO, all national health systems |
| MBSR (mindfulness) | High | Clinics in the USA, Europe, Israel |
| Yoga (regular practice) | Medium-high | WHO recommends physical activity |
| Qigong/Taiji | Average | WHO recognizes Traditional Chinese Medicine as |
| Reiki | Low | Not officially recognized anywhere |
This does not mean that reiki is useless. This means thatwe don’t have enough data to recommend it over anything else.
What does it mean if you think of reiki as a profession?
You will be selling a service for which:
- No evidence of effectiveness above placebo
- There are no mandatory quality standards
- No professional community with member protection
- There are legal risks with any expansion of statements
This can be done — and many people do it.But it is important to understand exactly what this business stands for.
In the next articleLet’s look at the question that is asked least often:Does your master even have a real transmission line? And why the majority cannot answer it.
