Economics, Buddhism, and the Five Principles: Why a Reiki Master Must Have Another Income Source

When a person is financially vulnerable and wants to monetise their practice as quickly as possible, they fall under the influence of an entire ecosystem of «monetisation coaches». Their message is simple: «If you can’t sell — you don’t earn. Sell through emotion, pain, urgency.»

The Fifth Principle of Reiki: Earn Honestly

The Five Principles of Usui are not decoration and not a beautiful slogan. They are the ethical foundation of the practice. The fifth principle in various translations reads:

«Just for today — work honestly. Earn your living honestly.»

Just for today, work honestly / earn your living honestly

In the Japanese tradition this principle had a concrete meaning: Usui had monastic students with a monastery as a base of existence. Lay students had a profession, a craft, trade. Teaching Reiki was not envisioned as a sole income source.

What Is Lost When Reiki Is the Only Income

  1. Esotericisation of the programme. The course fills with what «sells» — ancestral programmes, channelling, «protection from energy vampires».
  2. Concealment of limitations. The master does not say: «For depression — to a psychotherapist, for pain — to a doctor.»
  3. Inflation of promises. «Initiation» is sold as a transformational event after which «life will change».
  4. Tax risks. The Blinovskaya and Mitroshina precedents show where this leads.

What Reiki Uniquely Offers That Qigong and Yoga Cannot

Initiation (attunement / Reiju)

In qigong and yoga there is no structured transmission of the ability to work with energy from master to student through a special ritual. In Reiki initiation is specific work with the student’s energy centres:

  • Activation of palm centres (hoshi) — points through which energy is transmitted when working with clients
  • Activation of foot centres — for grounding and completeness of energy flow
  • Work with the crown centre as the entry point for universal energy

Paired Work: the Reiki Session

This is the key difference. In qigong and yoga the main work is the student’s personal practice. In Reiki there is a separate form: a session for another person — when the master works with a client through touch or at distance. This presence, space, and complementary to medical treatment — not a replacement.

An Honest Model for Teaching Reiki

  1. Independent income. Work or business unrelated to Reiki — not a deficiency, an ethical necessity.
  2. Transparent marketing. No «I’ll cure depression», no «ancestral programmes», no artificial urgency.
  3. Acknowledging competence boundaries. Explicit references to psychotherapy for psychological requests, to medicine for physical ones.
  4. Buddhist context. At least a basic understanding of the tradition from which Reiki emerged.
