What to do instead of reiki: three ways with a real base — and an honest conversation about accessibility.Lesson 5 of 5
The final article in the series.Lesson 4 — here.
In the previous four lessons we looked at what reiki stands for as a business. Now — an honest conversation about alternatives.Without rose-colored glasses: every path has real barriers to entry.
Path 1: Evidence-based psychotherapy
CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), ACT, EMDR, schema therapy — methods with the strongest evidence base and international recognition.
What does it give:state diploma, the opportunity to work in clinics, insurance coverage for clients in a number of cases, professional liability — and protection.
Barriers to entry:
- Basic higher education in psychology or medicine: 4–6 years, 300,000–600,000 rubles.at a private university
- Professional retraining for a specific method (CBT, EMDR): another 1–2 years, 80,000–200,000 rubles.
- Personal therapy and supervision are a requirement of most associations
Honestly:This is the most reliable way.And the most expensive and longest. For a person in an economic crisis, it is practically inaccessible without credit or support.
Path 2: Teaching Yoga
The RYT-200 and RYT-500 (Yoga Alliance) standard is the internationally recognized minimum for a yoga teacher.Studios, online classes, corporate programs — the market is real and growing.
What does it give:an international certificate that is understood by employers all over the world. Can be taught as physical education — no license required.
Barriers to entry:
- Course 200 hours: 50,000–150,000 rubles, 1–3 months of intensive
- You need your own sustainable practice — at least 1-2 years before the course
- Competition is high, especially in Moscow and online
Honestly:the most accessible entrance of the three. If you have practice, you can realistically start in 3–6 months. But the income at the start is small, it takes time to develop a customer base.
Path 3: Qigong and body practices
Health Qigong is recognized by WHO as an element of traditional Chinese medicine. Can be taught as “physical education” — without licenses.Tai Chi, breathing practices, body-oriented approaches.
What does it give:flexible, niche (less competitive than yoga), goes well with meditation and working with anxiety.
Barriers to entry:
- Training with a qualified teacher: from RUB 30,000, 6–12 months
- There is no single international certification standard — you need to choose a school carefully
Honestly:a good choice as a second practice next to something else.As the only source of income, it’s more difficult.
What if there is no money for a second education?
This is an important issue that is often ignored. In Russia in 2025–2026, many people interested in practices are in an economic crisis. This is why reiki seems attractive: a course for 10–22 thousand rubles.vs master’s degree for 500 thousand
Honest answer:There is no cheap route to a reliable helping profession..
But there are intermediate options:
- Free CBT Resources: Coursera courses (Yale, Beck Institute), some with subsidies. They don’t give you a diploma, but they give you knowledge for self-help and understanding of the field.
- State universities: Faculty of Psychology in the regions — 40,000–80,000 rubles/year, correspondence
- Social entrepreneurs: some NGOs finance the training of specialists to work with vulnerable groups
- Getting a job: assistant/administrator in a psychological center — entry into the profession with a salary and the opportunity to study alongside specialists
Main conclusion of the series
Reiki is not a scam.People really feel relaxed and supported. The problem is that reiki is likebusinessbuilt on three precarious foundations:
- The evidence base is weak— no randomized reproducible studies
- Legal status is unstable— a gray area that can close
- No professional protection— no standards, no responsibility, no community
If reiki is your personal practice, a source of internal resource is great. If it’s a way to help yourself relax, it works. But if you want a profession that will feed you in 10 years, you should build it on a more reliable foundation.
You can start small: practicing yoga or qigong in parallel with studying the basics of psychology. It’s not fast. But it is built on the ground, not in the air.
